How to Grow Bean Sprouts at Home

Growing your own food doesn’t have to mean having a large garden. One of the easiest and most rewarding foods you can grow at home is bean sprouts. With just a handful of mung beans, a glass jar, and a few minutes of care each day, you can enjoy fresh, crunchy sprouts in less than a week.

At DripDrop Wellness Iceland, we believe that wellness is built through small, sustainable habits. Staying hydrated, eating nutrient-rich foods, getting quality sleep, and managing stress all contribute to feeling your best. Growing fresh bean sprouts is one simple way to add more wholesome ingredients to your daily meals.

Why Grow Bean Sprouts?

Bean sprouts are inexpensive, easy to grow, and incredibly versatile. They’re commonly added to salads, sandwiches, noodle dishes, stir-fries, soups, and fresh spring rolls.

Mung bean sprouts are a source of vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, fiber, and plant-based protein. They also add a satisfying crunch without adding many calories, making them an excellent addition to a balanced diet.

What You’ll Need

Before you begin, gather the following:

  • ½ cup dried mung beans
  • A large glass jar
  • A sprouting lid, mesh lid, or cheesecloth secured with a rubber band
  • Fresh drinking water
  • A bowl or dish to catch excess water

Step 1: Rinse the Beans

Place the mung beans in your jar and rinse them thoroughly with clean water. Remove any damaged beans or debris.

Step 2: Soak Overnight

Cover the beans with plenty of fresh water. They will expand significantly as they absorb moisture, so make sure there is enough water.

Leave them to soak for 8 to 12 hours or overnight at room temperature.

Step 3: Drain Completely

After soaking, pour away all the water and rinse the beans once more.

Drain the jar thoroughly. Excess standing water can encourage mold or unwanted bacterial growth, so proper drainage is essential.

Step 4: Store the Jar Correctly

Place the jar upside down at a slight angle inside a bowl or dish so any remaining water can continue draining.

Keep the jar:

  • Out of direct sunlight
  • At room temperature
  • In a well-ventilated area

Step 5: Rinse Twice Each Day

Morning and evening:

  1. Fill the jar with fresh water.
  2. Swirl gently.
  3. Drain completely.
  4. Return the jar to its angled position.

This simple routine keeps the sprouts hydrated while preventing excess moisture from building up.

Step 6: Watch Them Grow

You’ll notice changes each day:

Day 1: Tiny white roots begin to appear.

Day 2: Small sprouts emerge.

Day 3: Sprouts become noticeably longer.

Day 4: They develop their familiar crisp texture.

Day 5: Most mung bean sprouts are ready to harvest.

If you’d like longer sprouts, continue rinsing for another day or two.

Step 7: Harvest and Store

Once your sprouts reach approximately 5 to 8 cm in length, give them one final rinse.

You can remove loose bean skins if you prefer, although this isn’t necessary.

Store your finished sprouts in a sealed container lined with paper towels in the refrigerator. They are generally best enjoyed within 3 to 5 days.

Delicious Ways to Enjoy Bean Sprouts

Fresh bean sprouts work well in many everyday meals, including:

  • Stir-fries
  • Pho and ramen
  • Fresh salads
  • Rice bowls
  • Sandwiches
  • Wraps
  • Omelets
  • Spring rolls
  • Vegetable soups

Their mild flavour makes them easy to pair with a wide variety of ingredients.

Food Safety Matters

Because sprouts grow in warm, humid conditions, they require careful handling.

For the best results:

  • Always wash your jar thoroughly before each batch.
  • Use clean drinking water.
  • Rinse sprouts twice daily.
  • Drain completely after every rinse.
  • Refrigerate promptly once harvested.
  • Discard sprouts that become slimy, discoloured, or develop an unpleasant odour.

If you are pregnant, have a weakened immune system, are an older adult, or are preparing food for young children, consider cooking sprouts before eating them, as cooking reduces the risk from bacteria that can sometimes be present on raw sprouts.
