Snæfellsjökull Run (Snæfellsjökulshlaupið)

The Snæfellsjökull Run will be held on June 20th and this will be the fifteenth time the race takes place.

The number of participants is limited to 350 runners.
As the starting area is spacious, all participants will start at the same time.
The fastest runners are encouraged to line up at the front.

There will be two aid stations offering water and sports drinks. Runners are encouraged to bring their own drinking containers; environmentally friendly paper cups will be available for those who need them.

Generous raffle prizes will be offered.
All participants will receive a small gift bag after finishing.

The Course

The course is approximately 22 km (about 13.7 miles), with a large portion on gravel roads.

The first 8 km involve an uphill climb of approximately 700–750 meters (2,300–2,460 ft) elevation gain. After that, the course descends toward Ólafsvík, where the finish line is located.

Runners can expect to encounter snow and mud between km 1 and km 7, depending on how snowy the winter has been.

Along the way, runners will experience unique natural beauty — not to mention the powerful energy of Snæfellsjökull.

Two aid stations will be positioned along the route at approximately 7.5 km intervals and will be managed by the rescue team Lífsbjörg.

At Arnarstapi, there will be a vehicle where runners can leave extra belongings and clothing, which will be delivered to the Sports Hall in Ólafsvík. Clothing may also be handed in at the aid stations if necessary. All clothing and equipment will be returned in Sjómannagarðurinn after the race.

Location and Time

The race starts at 12:00 (noon) from Arnarbær (the black turf house) by the road at Arnarstapi. From there, the route goes over Jökulháls to Ólafsvík on the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

A bus will be available from Ólafsvík to Arnarstapi for those who wish to use it. It departs at 10:45 from the Sports Hall in Ólafsvík and costs 2,500 ISK.

Ólafsvík is approximately a 2.5-hour drive from Reykjavík.
