Akrafjall Ultra
Akrafjall Ultra is a trail race held in Akranes on May 16, making it accessible for most people who want to try trail running near the capital area.
All distances award ITRA points and are therefore recognized as qualifying races for events such as the Laugavegur Ultra Marathon.
Time limits apply to all distances (see below)
10 km – start at 11:00
20 km (~650 m elevation gain) – 4-hour time limit, start at 10:00
27 km (~1250 m elevation gain) – 5-hour time limit, start at 09:00
NEW distance: 46 km (~2100 m elevation gain)
The race starts at UltraForm Akranes, Ægisbraut 29, and finishes at Akraneshöllin sports hall.
Race packet pickup
Packets will be available at Sportvörur, Dalvegur 32 (date to be announced).
Participants receive 25% discount on shoes, clothing, and running gear when picking up their bib.
Packets can also be picked up on race day from 06:30 at UltraForm Akranes, Ægisbraut 29, until your start time.
You may collect packets for friends or others.
Aid stations
One aid station will be located at the Akrafjall parking lot (for 20 km & 27 km runners).
Another station on the opposite side of the mountain is for 46 km runners.
20 km runners: pass the aid station twice
at 9.6 km and again at ~13.2 km
27 km runners: also pass twice
at 9.6 km and ~13.2 km
(no additional stations due to ITRA rules)
46 km runners: pass the Akrafjall parking station three times
at 9.6 km, ~22 km, and 35 km
plus water available from a stream at km 41 after the last peak (Geirmundartindur)
10 km: no aid station on the course.
➡️ Please bring your own cup/container, though some cups will be available.
Supplies include:
Vithit Energy drink, water and “Magic”, Holle chocolate, Clif Bar, Corny Soft Protein bars, bananas, and apples.
Course routes
10 km: flat trail course
20 km: includes Háahnúkur (555 m)
27 km: includes Háahnúkur (555 m) and Geirmundartindur (640 m)
46 km:
up Háahnúkur (555 m), run along the ridge and descend the far side (cut-off 3:30)
return the same route back up Háahnúkur and down to parking (cut-off 5:50)
finally up Geirmundartindur (640 m) (finish cut-off 8:00)
⚠️ The race does not start and finish at the same location.
