The Súlur Vertical Trail Race is an exciting mountain running event held in Akureyri, Iceland, on 31 July–1 August 2026. Participants can choose from four challenging distances:
- 18 km – The Falcon (Fálkinn)
- 28 km – Súlur
- 43 km – The Troll (Tröllið)
- 100 km – The Goddess (Gyðjan)
A Children’s Race will also take place on Friday, 31 July.
The Races
Gyðjan – 100 km
The Gyðjan is a demanding 100 km mountain ultramarathon with 3,580 metres of elevation gain.
The race begins at Goðafoss Waterfall and follows a spectacular route across Belgsárfjall and Vaðlaheiði toward Akureyri. Runners then climb Súlur Mountain, continue into Glerárdalur Valley, and finish in the centre of Akureyri.
Tröllið – 43 km
The Tröllið is a 43 km mountain race with 1,870 metres of elevation gain.
The course climbs Súlur Mountain before following the mountain ridge into Glerárdalur Valley, offering a demanding route through breathtaking scenery.
Súlur – 28 km
The Súlur is a 28 km mountain race with 1,410 metres of elevation gain.
A challenging course that is achievable for most runners with good preparation.
Fálkinn – 18 km
The Fálkinn is an 18 km trail race with 530 metres of elevation gain.
An enjoyable and accessible course suitable for most runners.
Children’s Race
A fun Children’s Race will be held in Kjarnaskógur Forest.
Schedule
All races take place on Friday, 31 July, or Saturday, 1 August 2026, depending on the distance.
